Intro to Part 5 & Chapter 16 (Part 1)

My take away from the Intro to part 5 and the first part of Chapter 16 was mostly how the Europeans were rising and how they continued to rise. That was what I got from the Intro to Part 5 but for the first part of Chapter 16, I was not only intrigued by the picture of the cover because it wasn't until I read the caption that I realized what it symbolized. But otherwise, then that, I was shocked to hear about the Haitian Revolution because I had never heard of it and it was interesting to read about the violence and racial dimension towards the French soldiers.

Chapter 18 + Documents

I believe it was in this chapter that we say the two phases in which Europeans either conquered or colonized. In phase one, the Europeans conquered what was the north and south of America. It was the Spain/Portugal, Britain, France, and Russia who used companies to get these countries and conquer them. It was a permanent displacement of Native people and populations. In phase two we see that Asia, Africa, and Oceana (Australia) are colonized, in fact, there was a scramble for Africa. Scramble Africa was the act of many European countries wanting to take some part of Africa because of there resources, those resources being the people and the natural resources the earth had to offer. There was also the fact that many of the European companies had missionaries who were there to simply administrate the land and then leave but then there were the European people who did stay long-term. Chapter 19

This chapter was interesting in the way that I was finally to see how China fit into the modern era. They believed they were the superior country and it's almost weird to see the certain types of crisis they had throughout this seeing as though they have always believed to be superior and had always thrived in the trading of silk. It was interesting to read about the Opium trade the, first seeing as though I didn't know what Opium was and learning about it, and secondly learn about the addiction problem it brought to China. The comparison between China and the Ottoman Empire was almost amazing to see how similar they were civilization was but it was there falling that was the biggest contrast. It was also interesting to hear that Japna was better at transforming into modernization than China was, and not only transforming but being able to keep it that way.

Chapter 13

     I read this chapter before coming into this class, therefore what I both remember reading and remember from the last semester it was a good refresher to know the rising empires during those times which I believe was the European empire, Russian Empire, and the Asian Empire. I felt relieved knowing that I knew a few things but it was also good seeing the dates as confusing as they may be.
